Diabetes in India: Current Data, Prediabetes, and Future Aspects
Prevalence
Diabetes Cases: India is home to one of the largest populations of people with diabetes. As of 2024, it is estimated that approximately 77 million people in India have diabetes, making it one of the countries with the highest number of diabetes cases worldwide.
Diabetes Type Distribution: The majority of cases are Type 2 diabetes, which is influenced by lifestyle factors and aging. Type 1 diabetes and other forms are less common but still significant.
Prediabetes
Prevalence of Prediabetes: It is estimated that around 30-40 million individuals in India are living with prediabetes. Prediabetes is a critical stage where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes.
Risk Factors: Common risk factors include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, poor dietary habits, and a family history of diabetes. Prediabetes often precedes Type 2 diabetes, and intervention at this stage can prevent or delay the onset of full-blown diabetes.
Management and Prevention: Lifestyle modifications such as regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and weight management are crucial for reversing prediabetes and preventing progression to Type 2 diabetes.
